Steely Dan Music

Steely Dan has been releasing music since 1972 when they first came out with the album “Can’t Buy a Thrill” which became incredibly popular. Since their first album they have experienced a tremendous amount of success, creating a number of hit singles which includes “Do it Again” as well as “Reelin’ in the Years”. Although Fagen did a majority of the vocals in the studio, David Palmer handled most of the live performances due to the fact that Fagen was too stage-shy when it came to singing. Members of Steely Dan eventually convinced Fagen that fans wanted to hear him sing on stage and he ended up coming out of his shell to perform in front of small audiences at first and then more and more as time passed.

After Fagen started taking over as the lead vocalist of the band on stage and in the studio, their career really started to take off. Palmer eventually ended up leaving the band in pursuit of other musical projects, not feeling needed by the band any longer. Somewhere down the line Palmer crossed paths with Carole King and began to play music with her, creating Jazzman. When the band put out “Countdown to Ecstasy”, Denny Dias was responsible for the position of rhythm guitar and they once again managed to increase and strengthen their already large fan base, solidifying their place in the music industry at the time.

Steely Dan is one of Americas most important rock and roll bands. You will find that many other rock bands, both from America and internationally have stated that the works of Steely Dan have inspired them. As an inspiration for up and coming rock and roll bands Steely Dan are big achievers. Their music has been described as being a blend of jazz, rock, pop, funk and rhythm and blues.

The core members for the band Steely Dan are Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band had its biggest successes during the 1970′s, but their music has lasted the test of time and their sounds have been the inspiration for many bands since then. Fagen and Becker toured with Steely Dan from 1972 to 1974. In 1975 Steely Dan became a studio based band. Their appeal waned during the late 1970′s on the charts, but they did develop a cult following. This cult following kept the Steely Dan name alive and helped to secure it’s return in the 1990′s. In 1993 Steely Dan resumed live concerts. They released two studio albums not long after recommencing their return to the music industry. The first of these two albums earning them a Grammy Award for the Album of the Year. This was seen by many to be a just reward for their efforts.

Becker and Fagen prefer a soul influenced style of backing vocal. The first few albums had almost always used a female chorus. Venetta Fields, Sherlie Matthews and Clydie King were the preferred trio of voices for backing singers on the Steely Dan albums of the late seventies. Steely Dan is also well known for their use of chord sequences and harmonies. This is used to develop the musical tension that can be created using traditional rock music and jazz style music.

Steely Dan – rocking out with real rock and roll legends

Steely Dan released their debut album, Can’t Buy a Thrill in 1972. This album made an immediate impression on the United States album charts. The hit singles Do It Again and Reelin’ In the Years made it to the number six and number eleven positions on the American Billboard singles chart. These songs have become a part of classic rock history and you will still hear them played on the classic rock and roll radio stations all over the world.

Steely Dan member Fagen was always reluctant to sing live. David Palmer was the one who performed most of the vocals while on stage. Unfortunately Palmer did not have the same impact with his versions and the other band members had to convince Fagen that it was his singing that the fans wanted to hear. The band was able to explain to Fagen that he was the one who could convey the attitudes and meaning of the songs to the fans. It was not long before Palmer left Steely Dan while they were recording their second album. Palmer joined with Carole King and they had great success with Jazzman.

The next album, Countdown to Ecstasy was very much a band oriented project. Denny Dias was the rhythm guitarist and has a famous electric sitar solo in the song Do It Again. Jeff Baxter was the lead guitarist and Jim Hodder played drums and provided singing for the track Midnite Cruiser. Becker played the bass and sang backup vocals. Fagen played the keyboards, including piano, organ and electric piano. Fagen sang the lead vocals on all the tracks except for three.

Countdown to Ecstasy was released in 1973. It never matched the commercial successes of Can’t Buy a Thrill. Becker and Fagen felt that they had had to rush the recording of the album between touring dates. They were not entirely satisfied with the performances on the album. A couple of classic singles from the Countdown to Ecstasy album include Show Biz Kids and My Old School. These singles are considered to be classics by fans and critics alike, but they never made an impression on the American charts. My Old School and another song from the album, Bodhisattva became popular classic rock songs in later years.

For those who have not heard of Steely Dan before this is a very quick look into Steely Dan. Steely Dan is an American rock and roll band. There are two key members to Steely Dan, Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. The band was a huge hit in the 1970′s. They release seven albums that brought together many musical styles. They were called the perfect musical antiheroes for the seventies by Rolling Stone Magazine. The band regularly changed its members of rock and pop musicians, with Walter and Donald remaining the keystones of the project. Their music has been said to be a complex jazz influenced sound. The lyrics were sharp witted and sarcastic. They would touch on themes that included drugs, crime and a contempt of the hippies from the West Coast.

Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were obsessive in their quest of perfectionism while recording in the studio. The 1980′s album Gaucho took over a year to make and they used 11 engineer and 42 different musicians for an album with seven songs. The band Steely Dan toured between 1972 and 1974. After this they only made music in the studio. Their appeal diminished during the late 1970′s and the group was disbanded in 1981. Steely Dan has a strong cult following. In 1993 there were more Steely Dan live concerts. There were also two more albums with new material. They have sold over thirty million albums worldwide. Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

The partnership again stalled in June of 1981. Donald Fagen released a solo album in 1982 titled The Nightfly. The album went platinum in the United States and the United Kingdom. The album produced a top twenty hit with IGY, International Geophysical Year. The men did attempt to collaborate again but were not satisfied with the results of their work.

Steely Dan the name behind the band

When it comes to some of the more hard rocking rock and roll bands then you might agree that Steely Dan is one band that holds its own against many of the new comers to modern music. Steely Dan was an all American band that was formed in 1970s and peaked towards the end of that decade but are still remembered today for some of their great songs. The band members only toured for two years until they became stuck in a recording studio and too busy to make another tour. By the time the 1980s has hit the band had already released seven albums. They were even featured in several rock and roll magazines like the Rolling Stones and other fashion magazines which stated that these guys were the band that lasted the long hard 70s rock era however they did not make it very far past this point. Not many people have bothered with the band after this time and the band slid out of sight and then mind for several years.

Later the band really got going again and by the time 1993 came along they were touring the country again. Many of the old fans came out of the closet and started to follow the band on tour again giving them the much needed support that Walter Becker and Donald Fagen needed to keep going. These two band members where the heart and the soul of the Steely Dan band which like many others of its time have faded in and out of the charts over many years. Some of their albums include Alive in America, Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go which was released in 2003. Even though the boys are getting old now they are almost unstoppable from their shows and tours across America. If you are lucky you will get to see them live before they retire for good this time which will be one experience you will remember for a life time. If you happen to come across some Steely Dan concert tickets then don’t sell them or give them away because the show itself will be something you really enjoy.

Steely Dan

There are many types and styles of music that the world has made available to everyone including music that comes from different parts of the globe which is then use by other people to jazz up into something even funkier. The styles of Steely Dan are very individual which is very much like the most famous singers who make it through their own unique sounds. Steely has been around for many years and with all his talent and skills will be around for hopefully many more to keep his fans entertained.

Being a major feature in the 1970 Steely Dan and the rest of his band made it to the big time because they were so great at their jobs as entertainers. Even the most rugged of critics said that their lyrics and songs where a real part of the generation W which survived the rock rebellion of the seventies. Alcohol and drugs where always a problem in his life and where a problem with the band too however some might say that without these influences they would never have been as popular because the teens of that generation knew all about the partying.

Living the fast life was a great way back in the seventies but after going hard for so long there is a wonder that any talent is left in them at all. After their last concert was a bit of a flop compared to the old days there is no doubt that only the older crowd from his generation are able to stand his unique sense of rhythm and song. Until these changes which fans say it should not then only the true old fans will be there following him to the very last step?
